St. Augustine to Amelia Island: A 3-Day Drive on Florida's Historic Coast
America's oldest city, ranked and timed around the crowds, then 70 miles of A1A north with driftwood beaches and a car ferry to Fernandina Beach.
St. Augustine was founded in 1565, which makes it the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the continental US, older than Jamestown by 42 years. The best things to do in St. Augustine are well known: a coquina fort, a Gilded Age hotel turned college, a striped lighthouse and brick streets that glow after dark. What most guides miss is that the trip gets better when you leave the city limits.
Drive A1A north and the coast turns wild: Vilano Beach, the marsh-and-dune trails of the Guana Tolomato Matanzas Reserve, a car ferry across the mouth of the St. Johns River, and Boneyard Beach, where bleached oak skeletons stand in the surf. The road ends at Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island, a Victorian shrimping town with a Civil War-era fort. The route runs St. Augustine → Vilano Beach → GTM Reserve → Mayport Ferry → Big Talbot Island → Fernandina Beach, about 70 miles spread over 3 days. Here is how to time it.
Things to Do in St. Augustine (Ranked)
Eight stops, ranked for a first visit. The order matters less than the timing: nearly everything here is within a 15-minute walk of the Castillo, so the real skill is putting each stop in the hour when it is least crowded.
- 1
Castillo de San Marcos
The oldest masonry fort in the continental US, built of coquina shell stone by Spain starting in 1672. Run by the NPS; the America the Beautiful pass is accepted, and adult entry is otherwise $15 (valid 7 days, card only; kids 15 and under free).
Best time: At the 9am opening, before tour buses fill the gun deck.
- 2
St. George Street
The pedestrian spine of the old city: balconies, courtyards and the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse facade.
Best time: 7:30–9am, when it belongs to joggers and shopkeepers sweeping stoops.
- 3
Flagler College
Henry Flagler's 1888 Ponce de León Hotel, now a college. Guided tours reach the rotunda and the Tiffany-glass dining hall.
Best time: A morning tour slot; check the college tour schedule, as times shift around the academic calendar.
- 4
The Lightner Museum
Housed in Flagler's former Alcazar Hotel, with Gilded Age glass, curiosities and the old indoor pool.
Best time: Early afternoon, when St. George Street is at its most crowded.
- 5
St. Augustine Lighthouse
219 steps to the gallery for the best view of the inlet, Anastasia Island and the old city skyline.
Best time: Late afternoon for softer light; the climb takes roughly 15 minutes with landings.
- 6
Fort Matanzas
A small 1740s Spanish watchtower fort 15 miles south, reached by a free NPS passenger ferry.
Best time: Get a boarding pass at the visitor center on arrival; passes are first-come and often gone by late morning.
- 7
The Colonial Quarter
A living-history block with blacksmithing, musket firings and a reconstructed 18th-century street.
Best time: Midday, pairs well with lunch on nearby Hypolita or Spanish Street.
- 8
A Ghost Tour at Night
St. Augustine leans hard into its haunted reputation. Lantern-lit walking tours are the best way to see the old city after dark.
Best time: After 8pm, when the day-trippers have left and the streets quiet down.
Ghost tours range from family-friendly lantern walks to adults-only pub crawls and trolley rides that include the old jail. Book the walking kind if you want to actually see the courtyards and alleys off St. George Street.

St. Augustine's old city was laid out for carts, not cars. Downtown street parking is limited and metered, and circling for a space on a Saturday can eat 30 minutes. The easy answer is the city's Historic Downtown Parking Facility beside the Visitor Information Center, a short walk from the City Gate, St. George Street and the Castillo. Park once and walk everything on Day 1.
Arrive before 10am on weekends and the garage is an easy in-and-out. The Bridge of Lions, the drawbridge linking downtown to Anastasia Island and the lighthouse, backs up at peak times and when it opens for boat traffic. Plan the lighthouse and Fort Matanzas as a single trip across the bridge instead of bouncing back and forth.
Nights of Lights wraps the historic district in millions of white lights each winter, typically from about mid-to-late November into mid-January. The city has announced the 2026–27 season for November 21, 2026 through January 18, 2027. It is beautiful, and it brings weekend gridlock to every road into downtown.
Go Monday through Thursday if you can. On a weekend, park and walk in by 5pm, before the lights come on, and have dinner downtown instead of driving in after dark. Light-Up Night itself (the opening Saturday) is the single busiest evening of the season.
The best months are March through May and October through early December, with highs mostly in the 70s and low humidity. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms most days, so do outdoor sights before 1pm from June to September.
The counterintuitive part: St. George Street at 8am is a different, lovely place from St. George Street at 2pm. At breakfast you get empty balconies, coquina walls in low light and room to look up. By early afternoon it is shoulder-to-shoulder with fudge-shop queues. Stay downtown the night before so you can walk it first thing.

One day in the old city, one day on A1A, one day on Amelia Island. Mileage is approximate and assumes the coastal route rather than I-95.
St. Augustine Old City
~2 mi on foot- 9am: Castillo de San Marcos at opening, then the seawall walk along Matanzas Bay
- 11am: St. George Street and the Colonial Quarter
- 1pm: Lunch, then the Lightner Museum
- 3pm: Flagler College tour across the street
- Evening: Dinner downtown, then a ghost tour
Park once at the Historic Downtown Parking Facility and leave the car there all day.
A1A North: Beaches, Ferry and Boneyard Beach
~70 mi (+~30 mi Matanzas detour)- Morning option A: Fort Matanzas ferry, then the lighthouse on the way back
- Morning option B: Anastasia State Park beach and dunes
- Cross the Vilano Bridge to Vilano Beach and head north on A1A
- Guana Tolomato Matanzas (GTM) Reserve: short trails between ocean and marsh
- Ponte Vedra and the Jacksonville beaches to Mayport
- St. Johns River Ferry across the river mouth to Fort George Island
- Big Talbot Island (Boneyard Beach) and Little Talbot Island State Park
- Over the bridges into Fernandina Beach for the night
If you want Boneyard Beach at sunrise and low tide, flip it: sleep near Jacksonville Beach and drive this stretch at dawn.
Amelia Island
~10 mi- Morning: Fort Clinch State Park, the fort and the beach trail
- Late morning: Centre Street and the Fernandina Beach historic district
- Afternoon: Main Beach or a quieter south-end beach access
- Evening: Wild Amelia Island shrimp at a harbor-front restaurant
Fernandina calls itself the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry, so order the local shrimp.
The Mayport Ferry is a vehicle ferry that carries A1A across the St. Johns River, run by the Jacksonville Transportation Authority. It typically departs about every 30 minutes and the crossing takes only a few minutes, but hours change seasonally (a new schedule takes effect October 1, 2026) and the ferry has closed for maintenance before. Check JTA's ferry page the morning you drive; if it is down, detour inland via I-295.
Boneyard Beach on Big Talbot Island is best at low tide, when you can walk among the driftwood trees, and at sunrise, when the light comes in low off the ocean. At high tide the beach narrows sharply. Check a tide table for Nassau Sound before you set the day's timing, and watch your footing on the bluff trail down.
Little Talbot Island State Park, just south of Big Talbot, has several miles of undeveloped beach and is the better swimming stop. Both parks charge a small Florida State Parks entry fee, so keep a card handy.

Plan it freeAmelia Island Essentials
Amelia Island bills itself as the "Isle of Eight Flags": France, Spain, Great Britain, the Patriots of Amelia Island, the Green Cross of Florida, Mexico, the Confederacy and the United States have all flown flags here. That history shows in the 50-block Fernandina Beach historic district, where Centre Street runs from the harbor past Victorian storefronts and one of Florida's oldest bars.
Fort Clinch State Park
A brick fort begun in the 1840s and garrisoned during the Civil War, set in a state park with beach, pier and maritime-forest trails.
A quieter beach scene
No high-rise wall like central Florida. Main Beach is the social hub; the south end and Peters Point are calmer.
Centre Street
Walk it end to end in an hour: bookstores, galleries and harbor views at sunset from the marina.
Shrimp Festival
The Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival is held downtown each spring, usually around late April or the first weekend of May.
Book festival weekend lodging months ahead; the island's inns and B&Bs fill quickly. The rest of the year, a historic-district inn puts you within walking distance of dinner, while the beach resorts on the south end trade that for oceanfront rooms.

Fernandina Beach to Savannah is about 2 hours on I-95, which makes the Georgia and South Carolina Lowcountry a natural continuation. Our Savannah to Charleston road trip picks up where this one ends.
Keep going down A1A to Flagler Beach and Daytona, then the Space Coast for a launch viewing if the schedule lines up. Or head inland to central Florida's spring-fed rivers, where the water stays around 72°F year-round.
What to Pack for Florida's Historic Coast
- Walking shoes with real cushioning. You will cover 5–8 miles on Day 1, much of it on brick and uneven coquina.
- A packable rain shell from June to September, when afternoon storms roll in almost daily.
- Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. There is little shade on the Castillo's gun deck or at Boneyard Beach.
- A warm layer from December to February. Winter highs average in the mid-60s°F, and a 9pm ghost tour by the bayfront feels colder.
- Bug spray for the GTM Reserve and Talbot Islands trails at dawn and dusk.
St. Augustine's old city is brick and coquina, which is brutal in the wrong shoes.

Three days covers the Historic Coast well. If you have five or six, pair it with Savannah: finish on Amelia Island, cross into Georgia the next morning, and you have a single coastal trip that runs from the oldest city in the continental US to the live-oak squares of the Lowcountry, all without a single interstate-only day.
