With stops at John Pennekamp, Robbie's, and the Seven Mile Bridge area, plan a full day — 6 to 8 hours. Most first-time visitors underestimate how much the stop-and-restart rhythm of the highway adds to total travel time.
Two-day version: Overnight in Islamorada (MM 82) or Marathon (MM 50) and complete the second half the next morning, arriving in Key West in time for the Mallory Square sunset. This is the recommended pacing for first-time visitors who want to actually stop at things.

Gas in the Keys runs $0.50–$1.00/gallon higher than mainland Florida — a permanent premium tied to transport costs. Fill a full tank at Florida City (the last mainland town) before entering the Keys. Don't rely on finding a cheaper station further south.

Return route — consider flying out of Key West
The return drive north on US-1 is the same road in reverse.
