10 Best Christmas Towns in the US You Can Drive To (2026)
Signature events, 2026 dates, the parking and lodging trap in each town, and the smarter place to stay instead.
The best Christmas towns in the US all share one problem: everyone else found them first. On a December Saturday in Leavenworth, the line for parking can outlast the lighting ceremony, and the only hotel rooms left are an hour away. The towns are still worth it. The trick is knowing when the crowds peak, where the traffic jams form and which nearby town to sleep in instead.
This guide covers 10 towns worth the drive, spread across the country: Leavenworth, Washington; Solvang, California; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Frankenmuth, Michigan; Natchitoches, Louisiana; Asheville, North Carolina; Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Woodstock, Vermont; Mystic, Connecticut; and St. Augustine, Florida. For each one you get the signature event, the 2026 dates where they're posted, the trap that catches first-timers and a practical workaround. Pick a region, link two or three towns and you have a holiday road trip instead of a single crowded evening.
The 10 Towns at a Glance
Dates below come from each town's official festival or tourism site as posted in September 2026. Schedules can shift, so confirm on the organizer's site the week before you go.

Drive times from airports are approximate and assume clear roads.
West: Leavenworth, Solvang and Santa Fe
Leavenworth, Washington
What to do: Leavenworth rebuilt itself as a Bavarian village in the 1960s, and at Christmas it commits fully. The Village of Lights, long known as the Christmas Lighting Festival, puts over half a million lights on Front Street and the surrounding blocks. Christmastown programming runs November 27 through December 24, 2026, with Santa, carolers and live music at the gazebo on weekends. The lights themselves stay on daily from Thanksgiving through the end of February.
When to go: A weekday in the first half of December gives you the full display with room to walk. Weekend afternoons are the crush.
The trap: December weekends mean full lots and long waits to get into town, and US-2 over Stevens Pass can require traction tires or chains. Stay in Wenatchee, about 22 miles east on the dry side of the mountains, and drive in on a weekday morning.
Check WSDOT's Stevens Pass page before you leave Seattle. Traction tire advisories and chain requirements can change by the hour in a storm, and the closest alternative route adds hours.
Solvang, California
What to do: Solvang is a Danish-style village with windmills, half-timbered bakeries and aebleskiver stands. Julefest runs November 27, 2026, through January 3, 2027, with a nightly light and music show, a tree lighting on December 4 and the Julefest parade on the morning of December 5.
When to go:It's an easy detour, roughly 3 miles off US-101 at Buellton, so it works as a half-day stop on a coastal drive. Pair it with Santa Barbara, about 45 minutes south, for dinner and a hotel with better availability.
The trap: Parade Saturday fills every lot in the village. Unless the parade is the point, pick another day.
Santa Fe, New Mexico
What to do:On Christmas Eve, thousands of farolitos (paper bags with candles inside) line the adobe walls of Canyon Road, and the street closes to cars for a free walk with carolers and small bonfires. It's one night only, which is exactly why it's special.
When to go: Arrive by 5pm, before sundown, so you can park in a downtown garage and walk up while the candles are being lit.
The trap: Santa Fe sits around 7,000 feet, and December nights often drop into the 20s°F. Wear real winter layers and waterproof boots. For the full drive, see our New Mexico road trip guide.
Midwest and South: Frankenmuth, Natchitoches and Asheville
Frankenmuth, Michigan
What to do:Bronner's CHRISTmas Wonderland is one of the largest Christmas stores in the world, with a building the size of roughly five football fields. It's open 361 days a year, so Frankenmuth works for a Christmas fix any time from November on. Add a family-style chicken dinner and a walk through the Bavarian-themed downtown.
When to go:A weekday morning. Bronner's opens at 9am Monday through Saturday, and the first two hours are the calmest of the day.
The trap: December Saturdays pack the store and back up traffic on Main Street. Birch Run, about 10 miles south on I-75, has chain hotels with more availability.
Natchitoches, Louisiana
What to do: Natchitoches is the oldest settlement in the Louisiana Purchase territory, and its Christmas Festival of Lights has run since 1927. The 2026 season is the 100th festival, running November 21, 2026, through January 6, 2027, with more than 300,000 lights and dozens of set pieces along Cane River Lake.
When to go: Opening night brings crowds far beyond the size of a town of roughly 18,000, and the centennial year will likely be bigger than usual. Go on a later weekend or a weeknight, when the lights are identical and the riverbank is walkable.
The trap:Local B&Bs book up early for festival weekends. Pair the stop with our Louisiana road trip and treat Natchitoches as one night on a longer loop.
Asheville, North Carolina
What to do: Christmas at Biltmore dresses the 250-room mansion in trees, garland and period decor. Candlelight Christmas Evenings run November 3, 2026, through January 9, 2027 (closed a few dates, including December 24), with live music inside the house.
When to go: Weekday daytime visits in early November or early December are the easiest tickets to get.
The trap: Hurricane Helene hit the region hard in 2024. Biltmore reopened within weeks and Asheville is welcoming visitors, but the National Park Service is still finishing repairs on a Blue Ridge Parkway section between Linville Falls and Mount Mitchell, targeted for the end of 2026. Check the NPS closures page before planning a scenic approach, and see our Blue Ridge Parkway road trip guide.
Biltmore sells timed entry for the house, and prime Candlelight dates in December sell out in advance. Book as soon as you pick your date, then build the rest of the trip around that time slot.
Northeast: Bethlehem, Woodstock and Mystic
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
What to do:"Christmas City USA" earns the name. Christkindlmarkt Bethlehem sets up at SteelStacks, under the old blast furnaces, from November 13 through December 20, 2026 (Friday to Sunday in November, Thursday to Sunday in December). Afterward, walk the historic Moravian district, where single candles glow in the windows.
When to go: A Thursday or Friday in early December. Saturday afternoons are the peak.
Woodstock, Vermont
What to do: Woodstock is the covered-bridge and village-green postcard. Wassail Weekend, December 11 to 13, 2026, brings a horse-drawn parade, a candlelit village walk, an artisan market on the green and events at Billings Farm.
When to go: Arrive Friday to beat the Saturday parade crowd, and stay in Quechee or White River Junction if Woodstock inns are full. Pair it with a Vermont winter drive.
Mystic, Connecticut
What to do:The Holiday Lighted Boat Parade runs down the Mystic River just after 6pm on November 28, 2026, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and it's free. Mystic Seaport Museum adds its own seasonal evenings.
The trap: Parade night fills downtown. Park in Stonington or Groton and come in early for dinner.
Day 1: NYC to Bethlehem (about 1.5–2 hours) for the Christkindlmarkt. Day 2: the long leg north to Woodstock (roughly 5 hours). Day 3: Wassail Weekend or a quiet village day. Day 4: Woodstock to Mystic (about 3.5 hours), then home to NYC (about 2.5 hours). The Wassail dates fall after the boat parade, so choose the parade or Wassail rather than trying to hit both on one trip.

St. Augustine, Florida
What to do:Millions of white lights outline the historic district, from the Plaza de la Constitución to the bayfront. The 2026–27 season runs from Light-Up! Night on Saturday, November 21, 2026, through January 18, 2027. It's warm enough for outdoor dinners in December, which no other town on this list can promise.
When to go: Monday through Thursday. Light-Up! Night and December weekends draw the biggest crowds of the season.
The trap:Weekend traffic gridlocks on the bridges into downtown. Park at the city's Historic Downtown Parking Facility next to the Visitor Information Center and walk, rather than circling the old streets.
Get into the parking garage before sunset on weekends. Once the lights come on, the approach roads slow to a crawl and the garage can fill.
How to Visit Christmas Towns Without the Crowds
What most guides miss: the decorations look the same on a Tuesday as on a Saturday. The difference is entirely in how you time and base the trip.
- 1Go on weekdays in the first week of December.
Every display is up, school holidays haven't started and the Saturday-before-Christmas surge is weeks away.
- 2Arrive before 3pm and stay for the lighting.
The counterintuitive move. Everyone else arrives at dusk and meets the traffic; you're already parked, fed and on the square when the lights come on.
- 3Stay 20–30 miles away and drive in.
Wenatchee for Leavenworth, Birch Run for Frankenmuth, Santa Barbara for Solvang. Rates are lower and rooms are actually available.
- 4Book festival-weekend lodging by September or October.
Small towns have few rooms, and the best ones for December weekends are usually gone by early fall.
- 5Check winter pass conditions on state DOT sites.
WSDOT for Stevens Pass and VTrans (New England 511) for Vermont mountain roads, the morning you drive.

Don't fly across the country for one crowded evening in one town. Pick a region and link two or three towns into a weekend: Solvang and Santa Barbara, Bethlehem and Woodstock, or Natchitoches on a Louisiana loop. You'll see more lights, spend less time in parking queues and come home with a road trip rather than a traffic story.
