Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 Itinerary
The San Francisco route to Yosemite is a journey through California's Gold Rush soul. Cross the Bay Bridge just after 8:30 AM — early enough to beat the worst of the eastbound traffic — and settle into Highway 120 as it climbs the Sierra Nevada foothills. Your first major stop is Groveland, a perfectly preserved 1849 mining town where lunch at the Iron Door Saloon — the oldest continuously operating saloon in California, founded 1852 — is as much a history lesson as a meal. Fill up your gas tank in Groveland: it is the last reliable fuel stop before the park on Hwy 120. The Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias, just inside the Big Oak Flat entrance, delivers the first standing-beneath-the-ancients moment of your trip. Note that the hike is downhill on the way in and uphill on the way out — manageable for most, but worth knowing. Your reward for sleeping inside the park tonight is waking up 5 minutes from Tunnel View tomorrow morning.
- Iron Door Saloon, Groveland - 18761 Main St, Groveland, CA 95321 - The oldest continuously operating saloon in California (est. 1852). Burgers, sandwiches, and a cold beer in a beautifully preserved Gold Rush-era bar. Fill up your gas tank in Groveland — last reliable fuel on Hwy 120 before the park.
- Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias - Tuolumne Grove Trailhead, Big Oak Flat Rd, Yosemite NP, CA - Hike down (0.5 mi, easy descent) into the grove of mature giant sequoias. You can step through a fallen tunnel tree. Note: the return hike is uphill (~400 ft elevation gain, moderate).
- Mountain Room Restaurant - Yosemite Valley Lodge, Yosemite National Park, CA 95389 - Dinner with floor-to-ceiling views of Yosemite Falls. Arrive early — waits after 6 PM can be 30–45 min.
- Yosemite Valley Lodge - 9006 Yosemite Valley Lodge Dr, Yosemite National Park, CA 95389 - Check in to Yosemite Valley Lodge — you're sleeping inside the park tonight. 5-minute drive to Tunnel View in the morning.
Day 2 Itinerary
This is the day you've been building toward. Waking early, you'll catch the south entrance gate before the summer queue builds. By the time you crest the ridge and roll into Tunnel View, the valley will be spread before you like a painting: El Capitan's sheer granite wall on your left, Half Dome's iconic silhouette dead ahead, and Bridalveil Fall threading white mist on your right. Today you're living inside that postcard. Park at Yosemite Village and use the free Valley shuttle for the rest of the day — driving between stops is restricted, and the shuttle is half the fun. A slow Yosemite Village lunch at Degnan's Kitchen sets you up for the Lower Yosemite Fall loop and a golden-hour walk along Sentinel Meadow. By the time you check into Yosemite Valley Lodge, you're sleeping at the foot of North America's tallest waterfall.
- Tunnel View - Tunnel View, Yosemite Valley, CA 95389 - The most photographed viewpoint in Yosemite. El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall all in one frame. Timed entry reservation required in peak season — check nps.gov/yose before departure.
- Bridalveil Fall - Bridalveil Fall Trailhead, Yosemite Valley, CA - Short paved walk (0.5 miles round-trip) to the base of the 617-ft waterfall. Bring a light rain jacket — mist can be heavy in spring and early summer.

- Sentinel Meadow & Merced River Walk - Sentinel Meadow, Yosemite Valley, CA - Stroll the boardwalks through the open meadow for the classic Half Dome reflection in the Merced River. The soft afternoon light here is ideal for photography.
- Mountain Room Restaurant - Yosemite Valley Lodge, Yosemite National Park, CA 95389 - Steaks, fresh fish, and California cuisine with floor-to-ceiling views of Yosemite Falls. Arrive before 6 PM to avoid waits.

Day 3 Itinerary
A relaxed 9 AM departure from the Lodge gives you a quiet final morning in the Valley before driving up Glacier Point Road. Arriving at the overlook by 10 AM puts you just ahead of the late-morning rush, and you'll have the best light for photos. After taking in the panoramic Sierra views, you exit the park and retrace the beautiful Hwy 120 corridor — this time you know every bend. A coffee and browse in Groveland at Mountain Sage feels like a warm send-off from the mountains. Then it's down to Manteca for a leisurely lunch at Black Bear Diner before rejoining I-580 west. With a 6 PM San Francisco arrival you'll just miss the worst of the rush hour.
