Oregon Coast Road Trip: US-101 from Astoria to Brookings in 6 Days
About 360 miles of public beach, planned by tide table instead of by town, with the safety rules most coast guides skip.
US-101 runs roughly 360 miles down Oregon's coast, and every mile of beach along it is public by state law. That makes an Oregon coast road trip better planned by tide table than by town: the best sea stacks, tide pools and caves are only reachable for a couple of hours a day.
What most guides miss: the best stops are five to ten minutes off the highway, and in summer the coast is often fogged in while inland Oregon is clear. This six-day plan runs north to south so the sun and the ocean are on your right-hand side for the best views, and it sequences each day around the coast's real constraints.
The 6-Day Route at a Glance
Mileage is approximate; add 20 percent for photo stops. Most days are under 90 miles on purpose, because the point of this drive is the pull-outs.
Astoria and Cannon Beach
~25 miStart at the Astoria Column for a view over the Columbia River mouth, then drive south to Cannon Beach for Haystack Rock and Ecola State Park.
Tillamook and the Three Capes Loop
~60 miCheese at the Tillamook Creamery, then the Three Capes Scenic Loop past Cape Meares, Cape Lookout and Cape Kiwanda.
Lincoln City to Newport
~65 miDevil's Punchbowl, Depoe Bay whale-watching and Yaquina Head Lighthouse, which has one of the best tide-pool areas on the coast.
Yachats to Florence
~70 miCape Perpetua, Thor's Well at the right tide, Heceta Head Lighthouse and the Sea Lion Caves, ending at the Oregon Dunes.
Coos Bay and Bandon
~90 miDune country gives way to Bandon's sea stacks. Walk Face Rock Beach at low tide.
Samuel H. Boardman to Brookings
~85 miTwelve miles of pull-outs along the Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor, then finish in Brookings.
Beach Safety: Tides, Sneaker Waves and Logs
The Oregon coast kills more careless visitors than its reputation suggests. Three hazards matter:
- Sneaker waves: unusually large waves that run far up the beach with no warning. Never turn your back on the ocean and never sit on a log near the water line.
- Tidal traps: some beaches and rocks are cut off at high tide. Check NOAA tide predictions before you walk to a sea stack or into a cove.
- Rolling logs: driftwood logs can be moved by surf and have crushed people who were sitting or playing on them.
Check the National Weather Service surf forecast for the coast each morning. High-surf advisories mean stay off the beach and rocks, however calm it looks.
Stops Worth a Detour
- Ecola State Park: forested headlands with views south to Cannon Beach; a day-use fee applies.
- Cape Kiwanda: climb the sand dune at the cape and watch dories launch from the beach.
- Devil's Punchbowl: a collapsed sea cave that fills with surf; best at mid to rising tide.
- Yaquina Head: lighthouse and tide pools; check the tide first.
- Cape Perpetua: the highest point you can drive to on the Oregon coast, with trails down to Thor's Well.
- Heceta Head Lighthouse: one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country.
- Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area: sand dunes that stretch for about 40 miles near Florence.
- Cape Blanco: the westernmost lighthouse in Oregon, with a long, windy bluff.
- Natural Bridges viewpoint: sea-carved arches in the Boardman corridor.
Most Oregon State Parks charge a day-use fee, and passes are available; check stateparks.oregon.gov for current rates before you go.
The Gas Rule and Other Oregon Quirks
Oregon has long required gas stations to be attendant-served, though the rule has been relaxed in recent years, particularly in rural counties. Confirm what applies at the pump when you arrive, and have your card ready rather than expecting to fill the tank yourself. Oregon has no statewide sales tax, which helps on lodging-adjacent spending.
Cell coverage is thin on the southern coast and in some canyons north of Newport. Download offline maps before you leave a town.
US-101 has a dozen stops that matter and no obvious order. TripsGalaxy.com builds your Oregon coast route with scenic stops every 2–3 hours and opens it in Google Maps.
Plan it freeWhen to Go
| Season | What to expect | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Summer (Jul–Aug) | Driest weather, biggest crowds, fog on the coast | Book early |
| Early fall (Sep–Oct) | Clear days, thinner crowds, calmer lodging prices | Best overall |
| Winter (Nov–Feb) | Storm watching, lowest rates, high surf | Dress for it |
| Spring (Mar–May) | Gray whale migration, wildflowers, changeable weather | Good value |
The counterintuitive pick is late September: the summer crowds are gone, the fog tends to lift, and the sea is still warm enough to look inviting from the car.
Where to Stay: Cannon Beach, Newport or Bandon
- Cannon Beach: the most scenic base on the north coast and the priciest; best for Haystack Rock and Ecola.
- Newport: the middle of the route with the most lodging and restaurants; best for central stops.
- Bandon: quieter and more remote; best for sunsets at Face Rock and southern coast stops.
