Spring and summer are underrated. Waterfalls run hardest in spring from snowmelt, and summer opens up the swimming holes along the Esopus and at the base of several Catskill falls. Crowds are a fraction of October, and lodging is both available and cheaper.

Winter is quiet but limited. Route 23A through Kaaterskill Clove can ice over, and the falls trail becomes a genuine hazard without traction devices. The river towns stay pleasant year-round if you're treating the trip as food and galleries rather than hiking.
