Hudson Valley and Catskills Road Trip from NYC

Two hours from Manhattan and the character changes completely. Hudson is a single long main street of antique shops, galleries, and restaurants that punch well above the town's size.

• Warren Street — the town's spine: antique shops, galleries, and independent restaurants
• Olana State Historic Site — Frederic Church's Persian-inspired mansion, and the single best river view in the region
• Hudson Athens Lighthouse — visible from the waterfront, seasonal boat tours available

Olana's grounds are free to walk and open year-round; the house itself requires a timed ticket. Even if you skip the interior, drive the carriage roads for the view.

Into the mountains proper. Kaaterskill Falls is the tallest waterfall in New York State at 260 feet across two tiers — taller than Niagara, though with far less water behind it.

• Kaaterskill Clove viewpoints — roadside overlooks on Route 23A through the gorge
• Woodstock — the actual town, not the festival site; a genuine and enduring artist community

The 1969 festival was held in Bethel, about 60 miles southwest — not in Woodstock. The town is worth visiting on its own merits, but adjust expectations.

Cross back over the river for the return leg. Rhinebeck is a preserved 18th-century village and home to the oldest continuously operating inn in America.
